Ella Morton is the co-author of the book, Atlas Obscura: An Explorer’s Guide to the World’s Hidden Wonders.
And hidden they are. As you’ll hear in our conversation, Ella and her team have uncovered some truly unusual sights around the world. Things you couldn’t even dream up in your wildest imagination but never-the-less are documented in this book. About 700 entries in all.
Ella and I met when we were both speaking at the Denver Travel and Adventure Show. I feel really fortunate that our paths crossed because, frankly, I hadn’t heard of this book and I came to find it endlessly fascinating and Ella to be such a delight.
Ella grew up in Australia but she now calls New York City her home. The truly interesting thing that came out of our conversation was the arc in her life. How there were things that she found interesting in her childhood and then those things manifested into several careers that she’s had and actually led her to this point.
I love to hear when people end up pursuing or creating a lifestyle that seemingly manifested from something they simply loved early on in life. Sometimes this happens on purpose and sometimes by accident, but it doesn’t matter how, I just find it really inspiring. That’s what I feel like Ella is doing now, living out her childhood dream.
