There are some people you meet for the first time and within seconds you know you like them. They walk into your home, they give you a hug, they take off their shoes, search for a fork for the breakfast they’ve brought with them and they grab a tissue without asking for one.
That’s Mona Das. 
Mona’s running for Congressional office in the 8th District of Washington State. And while I don’t consider myself a political person (and this episode is not political per se), I was really interested in chatting with Mona because I wanted to know what it takes to run for office in today’s climate as a woman and as a person of color.
First, I have to say that Mona blew me away in terms of what I thought an Indian woman was (or was supposed to be). She also totally turned my perception upside down of what a political candidate “should” be.
Mona is 5’1” (she’s an inch shorter than me) but she packs a punch and leaves an impression. She’s someone you want at your Sunday brunch with friends because you know the conversation won’t stop and it’ll always be something interesting and thought-provoking.
She’s an open book and you can tell she’s got a heart of gold. In short, she’s definitely someone you want representing you because you know she’s going to fight like hell to make things right.
Seeing her photo on her website or facebook page, reading her bio and about her values. None of these do her justice compared to when you meet her in person (or you hear her as you will on this podcast).
I really hope she represents the changing face of politics (meaning I hope there are more like her out there running). And I don’t just mean that literally just because she’s a woman. Or because she’s Indian. I mean because of what’s underneath all that. She’s a powerhouse like few women I know.
Mona was moved into action when she woke up on November 9th. While her friends were in puddles of tears on the floor after the 2016 election, Mona was compelled to do something positive. She decided to run for office.
I only wish I lived in Mona’s District because you can bet I’d vote for her in a heartbeat. And I think you’ll feel the same way once you hear from her.
